SEA - WHAT IS THERE

the sea with its endless depth and width inspires as a place of longing, serves as a projection surface, calmes as a room of relaxation and as the ideA of adventure challenges people worldwide.
but this elemental power is in danger.

SEA-WHAT IS THERE shows seascapes constructed from plastic washed up on Northern German beaches. The images stimulate a discourse on longing and fact. In the field of tension between the worship of nature and the destruction of nature, this photographic series, in its form between documentation and staging, raises questions about subjective seeing.

Art Historian Dr. Simone Husemann says about SEA-WHAT IS THERE: "In her work, Lis Kortmann succeeds in using the technique of photography in such a way that it not only creates an imaginary pictorial space of immense span and true expressiveness that is second to none and lets us immerse ourselves, because what we see or think we see robs us of any connection to reality, but in this way also creates a thoroughly real space of possibilities that gives space to individual and social perspectives and ideas."
